Standard, Compliant Build and Release Using IBM/Rational Build Forge

The Challenge

A Fortune 100 life insurance company had many different build and release policies and procedures across its many business units and departments. The industry, in general, was under increasing audit and compliance pressures. The build and release procedures were not only non-standard but also non-compliant. The current SCM tools that the company used could not handle the build and release requirements of the various business units. Therefore, no standard solution was possible.

The Solution

Black Diamond Software, partners with Build Forge, Inc. prior to its acquisition by IBM, teamed with Build Forge to show the insurance company that Build Forge would be able to satisfy all the necessary build and release requirements. Black Diamond was then hired to implement the solution after IBM’s acquisition of Build Forge.

The scope of the solution included:

• installing and configuring IBM Rational Build Forge on Windows 2003 using Microsoft SQL Server
• defining the physical and logical system architecture
• defining naming convention standards and usage models
• implementing procedures and project templates to meet audit and compliance mandates
• implementing custom Build Forge adapters for Borland StarTeam
• implementing adapters for reporting
• mentoring development teams in using IBM Rational Build Forge providing user and administrator training.

The Result

The insurance company now has standard, compliant build and release procedures across all its business units and departments. The enterprise has successfully adopted Build Forge as its build and release automation tool.
